History Stops By Whittier: Dr. Terrance Roberts

Dr. Terrence Roberts is a member of the famous Little Rock Nine. The Little Rock Nine was a group of African-American students who were enrolled in the racially segregated Little Rock Central High School in 1957. Unfortunately, only 9 of the 150 African American students selected to attend Central High actually attended. The reason for these people leaving so quickly was most of their parents were afraid of threats and did not want their children to get hurt in any way possible. Dr. Roberts explained to us that he faced most of these threats with words and nonviolent actions. He also said a member of the Little Rock Nine members had to be taken to the hospital because she was fed up with the bullying and fought back. She was the only one of the nine that did not go through the school all the way through.  Dr. Roberts explained to us that you are the CEO’s of your own education, and it is important that you take charge on your learning because education is the key to success.  If Dr. Roberts did not do what he did, then many like me would not be in school right now.
